XP 2 computer network

B

Hi, I searched the newsgroup and the web for the answer but am stumped!
Bought a new PC and networked to my old PC. Both have Windows XP home. Ran the network setup wizard on both. Internet connection sharing works fine. The old computer can see/access the files on the new computer fine. But the new computer cannot access/see the files on the old computer. My Workgroup is called home. The message I get when I click on View Workgroup computers is:

"Home is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator....
Windows cannot find the network path. Verify that the network path is correct and the destination computer is not busy or turned off. If Windows still cannot find the network path, contact your network administrator."

Both guest accounts are turned on, if that matters, and file and print sharing is set on for both....The new computer, connected to the internet has three network connections. Internet Gateway and 2 LAN or High-Speed internet connections-one named 1394 connection, the other Local Area Connection. The old computer just has one network connection, called Local Area Connection.

Any help would be greatly appreciated......

TIA, Bevin B.

Bevin,

How did you turn the Guest accounts on?

Check for misconfigured / overlooked firewalls, and for registry setting
restrictanonymous.

Nothing works....let's try again. Both PCs are running XP Home SP2,
the same anti-virus, there are no firewalls other than the XP firewall.
I disabled all the anti-spyware before I installed if that makes a
difference. I now do not have guest accounts on as it works the one
way with out them....i.e. they don't seem to be relevant.....

The system is linked to high speed through a wired router, then both
PCs are connected (cabled) out of that router.
I ran the Network Setup on the NEW PC first, then did the exact same on
the OLD PC.
When I go to the OLD PC to My Network Places I can easily find my NEW
PC and access the shared files there. When I go to the NEW PC to My
Network Places, it shows the NEW PC under shared documents.....it also
shows it under View Workgroup Computers, but this time I don't get the
message that HOME is not accessible....

Thanks for any help, Bevin

Bevin,

Please be more specific about what the problem is right now. All I see is:
When I go to the OLD PC to My Network Places I can easily find my NEW

What can't you do now?

I'm guessing that you still have a browser conflict. A browser conflict will
cause problems with Network Neighborhood. Most common causes of browser
problems are firewalls and restrictanonymous; after that, plain browser
conflicts are always possible. Run "browstat status" on both computers, and
let's see what it shows.

Read more about the browser, and where conflicts come from:

Hi Chuck, I can't access files on the Old PC from the New PC. But
using the old PC I can access files on the New PC. i.e. my network
only works one way.

I ran the browstat status. I wish there was a way to cut and paste
that info into here....

When I run it on the OLD pc I get an error message:

It says Browsing is active on Domain
Master Browser name is NEW
could not connect to registry, error = 53 Unable to determine build of
browser master: 53

\\\\NEW Version :05.1 Flags 41203 NT Master

1 backup servers retrieved from Master New

1 servers in domain MSHOME on transport
1 domains in domain MSHOME on transport

When I run it on the NEW pc I get no error messages;

Same as above but says Master browser is running build 2600, and
nothing re Version :05.1 Flags 41203 NT Master

I have no idea what that means, but that error must be a problem...

what is the next step?

Thanks, Bevin

Bevin,

Please read the instructions more closely. Copying and pasting should be easily
possible. If you can access either computer from the other, you can transfer
files that way, at least to move diagnostic data like browstat.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/browstat-utility-from-microsoft.html>

If you have a simple browser conflict, the solution in a 2 computer network is
to disable the browser on one computer (doesn't matter which). But, if you will
read my article,
Don't go changing the browser setup without having some chance of producing results.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/04/nt-browser-or-why-cant-i-always-see.html>

Please try to copy and paste both browstats here in their entirety. There may
be several useful clues. And "ipconfig /all" from each computer will help too.

The only difference I can see is node type, is that a problem?

Hi Chuck:
I read the article on what the browser does; I disabled the browser in
the Old PC, then rebooted both, still doesn't help....Just thought I'd
let you know....

Thanks, Bevin

Bevin,

Well, a browser conflict is not the problem.
Browstat Status from New PC:
Master browser name is: NEW
There are 1 servers in domain MSHOME on transport
Browstat status from the Old PC:
Master browser name is: NEW
There are 1 servers in domain MSHOME on transport
But each browstat shows only 1 server seen.
Read this article:
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/troubleshooting-network-neighborhood.html#Browser>
Check for:
# Firewalls.
# Restrictanonymous.
# Hidden.

Node Types Hybrid and Unknown are OK. Hybrid is unnecessary; Broadcast would be
better, but I don't think that's your only problem.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/address-resolution-on-lan.html>

You have no gratuitous protocols, and both computers are on the same subnet, and
in the same workgroup. Both computers recognise New as the master browser even.

If this isn't a totally new problem, it almost has to be one described in the
above links. What antivirus do you have?

B

bevinb

Hi, I had not looked at this for awhile. Tried other things you had
suggested - the restrictanonymous setting - and everything was fine.
Finally I went to the network connections and set both PCs connections
to restore default settings on the firewalls and then everything
worked!

Thanks for the help, now I know lots of things to look for if I am ever
helping someone else set up a network.
