XML files crash explorer.exe

S

Steph

Hi!

When our students are programming, they frequently
open .HTML and .XML files.

As strange as it may seem, sooner or later, a Dr.Watson
will pop telling that explorer.exe has generated errors
and will be closed by Windows(yes explorer.exe and NOT
iexplore.exe) when they open Internet Explorer.

I can easily reproduce the crash, so i tried:

- Reinstalling IE6
- Installing all updates
- With or without MSXML 4 SP1
- Removed all spyware

With no success.

Renaming the .XML files to .TXT seems to prevent the
crash from happening, but it's not quite a solution.

TIA

I am having the same problem. Every time I go to edit an XML file,
explorer crashes hard. I am an admin for a software company, and many
of my developers are having the same issue. Any feedback would be
helpful!

OP mentioned Dr Watson. Do you have drwtsn32.log dump
for this symptom? If so use the Stack Back Trace for the crashing
task to give you clues about your crashes. (In a dump from an
English version of Windows the crashing task can be found by
looking up from the bottom for FAULT -> . Page ahead to see
the Stack Back Trace. Neither of you have mentioned the OS.
If it is Win2K users seem to also need to activate the Symbol Table
dump (just to see the module names). YMMV.
