.xlsx files nightmare!

I have an annoying problem - my new computer came with a trial version of MS Office and I created a document in Excel which contained some very important information it created an xlsx file. When my trial version expired I could no longer open the file and despite loading my ancient version (Office 2000) It will not recognise it as an excel file because it is no longer an .xls file and I can not work out how to extract my very important info - I simply have no need to buy Office 2007. Can anyone help me??
