.xlsx file opens as read-only

Using an older verion of Excel with the compatiblity pack installed. File
opens okay on one pc with older version of excel, but (you knew there was a
but).

On another pc Excel opens file as xl0000001.xls Read-Only file in the
Temporary directory.

Suggestions?

Check the following setting -

Explorer, Tools, Folder Options, File Types,
..xlsx opens with may be set to Microsoft Open XML Converter
reset opens with to Microsoft Office Excel

thank you for this information I have had this problem at work today and it really helped me to fix this particular users problem

The problem didn't fix it but that was part of the problem here what else I did that did help fix the problem
Then re-boot pc

I uninstall the converter> re-paired office> re-boot> re-install converter file> open file

If doesn't work uninstall converter> uninstall excel> re-booted>re-installed excel>re-installed converter>re-boot and problem is fixed.
