I guess I'm one of the last ones to find this program.

http://www.wilsonc.demon.co.uk/d7xananews.htm

It's a really attractive news reader/e-mail program. It has a rich set of
features, and many configuration settings. It seems to handle attachments
well in Mime, Base 64, and YEnc. It's not really usable to me personally as
is. The deal killer for me is the inability to automatically delete and
purge "aged" headers and messages as new ones are downloaded.

I'll be watching this program. It has great potential, and a few little
tweaks could make it a solid news reader/e-mail program.

It's a 1 file wonder, and the Delphi 7 source is available!

Is it not the same person who did Xnews ??? As that has a mammoth
following and was/is a feature rich reader.

I just liked to read my news off line, so never got on with it as I *was*
a dial up user.

I will give this a try, as Pan is wearing a little thin for me.

No, Luu Tran wrote Xnews and Colin Wilson is developing Xananews.

Yea, they do look similar, but not a lot. I didn't get along too great with
Xnews, but looks like I'll be able to use Xananews if a couple of minor
features are added.

FYI:

XanaNews has two Usenet support forums on forums.talkto.net, viz.

How to get a 1 file wonder (no install) from what I see on the web page?

Looks like install/compile, etc.

XanaNews is a good newsreader IMHO. It's the only newsreader that allows you
to remove message headers. I would like it if it had offline reading.

Have you tried to use Hamster (classic) with it? I use Xnews
and it doesn't have offline capacity either, so I use Hamster
with it (and in fact also to handle my email) - a bit steep
learning curve (just a bit) but really great program!

(btw, if you want to try it, I suggest to get the lastest
build 2.0.5.5. Although they call it beta, it is indeed quite
stable)

Thanks, Bob. That server was busy for a few days.

Looks good so far. Thunderbird would be fine, but I can't copy a post's brief
header and message in one screen.

Can you do this in XanaNews?

Hi Mike

Yep. It sure can.

I like the way it handles headers. Header options are:

None
Short
Full
Custom

I just found out that Xananews hides files nested way down in C:\Documents

Totally unacceptable. FLUSH goes Xananews. :(

By default in Windows, Firefox puts profiles and cache in
"C:\Documents and Settings\(userid)\Application
Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\default.xxx"
I bet Thunderbird does the same thing.

Posting that in the Xananews newsgroups would be a good idea. The
author does appear to listen (but not always act) on user complaints.

This has nothing to do with Xananews, other than confirming that
Xananews is placing its data in the directory specified in your Windows
environment. Assuming you are using some flavor of WinNT, type
%appdata% in a Windows Explorer address bar to see that is exactly
where applications /should/ store their data. IMO, it would be a bad
idea for you to try to change that, but probably there are instructions
somewhere at microsoft.com.

I'm curious; where did you expect the files to be placed?

Not very "green", are they? :)

I complain to every author about crap strewn in the Windows user and system
folders. There are many good programs that do this, but that doesn't make it
right.

When some programs are un-installed, they leave junk behind in the user and
system folders. Grrrr!
