X800XT AGP problem

I've just purchased an X800XT Platinum Edition, and am having a few probs
getting it to work.... windows XP simply will not load, it gets so far on
the progress bar screen then freezes! I was using a 9800 pro before this and
did a complete driver uninstall before fitting the new card. With a clean
driver boot, the comp boots up first time, no probs... then it starts to
detect the card, installs the drivers and reboots... and then runs into the
start up problem! I've fitted the 9800 back in and it boots up without a
problem!

My system specs are Asus K8N-E deluxe mobo, AMD 64 3200+, 1 gig ram

I've updated the mobo chipset drivers and the bios... neither of which has
helped. I've changed AGP aperture/voltage settings, disabled fastwrites,
sidebanding etc... still nothing!

This is seriously beginning to p*** me off right now, aside from a complete
XP re-format, does anyone have any other suggetsions?!

Any helps appreciated!

I think when windows detects the video card and tries to install
anything you are supposed to click on CANCEL. After windows has
finished booting up you run the ATI install program.

yeah, I did all that.... cancelled all the automatic detection until it says
'there was a problem with the installation...' and installed a fresh driver
set. Still no difference. Strangely enough I now have the system running
with the card in and the latest omega drivers, I ended up disconnecting all
my hard drives and attaching a brand new SATA drive, then booting up....
however I couldn't find my XP disc so re-connected all my old drives, booted
up into safe mode, uninstalled the 9800pro AND the X800 drivers from the
Add/Remove section and rebooted.... then when it booted up, it automatically
detected the X800 and installed the Omega drivers all by itself... without
requiring a restart! Only problem is that I'm now scared to switch or reboot
my pc incase it locks up again!!

Seconded. You have no idea which driver XP is loading (you may find several
on your hard-drive if you've downloaded a series with your 9800Pro). It may
even be loading a Windows driver (which is always a bad idea). Try that
first and let us know.

i recommend using this http://www.drivercleaner.net/ program to completely
uninstall, actualy totaly remove, the drivers from the system. (MAKE
POSITIVE YOU FOLLOW THE README TO A "T") than install the new card, keep
your internet unplugged, cancel out at the opted points and run the latest
cat 5.9 executable.

i say keep your internet unplugged because windows trys to download drivers
for hardware when it cannot find any.

Yep, I ran this right at the beginning also (sorry, forgot to mention!)
however, as stated in my other mail... it seems to be working now! Even
after a few reboots. It would appear the 'solution' was disconnecting the
HDD's and then re-connecting them, booting into safe mood and removing all
the drivers, effectively starting from scratch again! Why this didn't work
the first time round, I haven't a clue!

Ah well, thanks for everyones reply.... much appreciated!

If you had two sets of display drivers and one video card that might
be the cause of your problem. ATI has a Cat uninstall utility on
their website that I would recommend running before you install new
ATI hardware.

As for your new hard drive you might have to go into the bios to let
the operating system know the order in which in should look for the
boot device. If you want to make the new drive your boot drive c:,
new hard drives usually come with a dos program that sets up your
drive and moves all the data from the old drive to the new drive.

No, you seem to have misunderstood what I said... I only connected the SATA
drive (my others are IDE, which I disconnected) as it is a clean disk with
nothing on it, so my theory was to install a copy of xp on it and see if the
vid card worked with that! However, I couldn't find my XP disc so scrapped
the idea and just connected my IDE drives back up... and after the removal
of the drivers and a reboot, everything seemed to be ok! Only now the
problems creeped back. It's locking up again on start up!!

As my system stands now... there is only the Omega X800XT drivers installed,
nothing else.... yet the system still hangs! It does it just as the progress
bar is going across the screen and the screen flickers, as if the vid card
is being initialised by windows... which is something that happens on all
comps when windows loads, there's always a little flicker before it goes
into the desktop... so the problem is occuring precisely at this point! Only
whats causing it, I haven't the foggiest!

Use Driver Cleaner.

- Download free Driver Cleaner 3 and install
http://www.drivercleaner.net/dc.htm
- download and extract ATI drivers (don't install)
- boot in Safe Mode (Press F8 during Windows XP boot)
- uninstall any and all drivers related to ATI through control panel /
add-remove programs
- reboot pc and go back into safe mode
- run driver cleaner 3 and remove all ati drivers (try all ati related items
in the Driver Cleaner pulldown menu)
- reboot back into WinXP normally
- when WinXP asks for drivers, cancel out of everything
- run ATI drivers
- reboot and enjoy!
