Best ATI/Omega drviers for X800XT ?

J

JM

Hello,

I just bought an ATI X800XT (AGP). Always used Geforce before, but am
very happy with this new card! Lots of 'raw' processing power.

I wanted to immediately update to the latest (v5.13) drivers, but am
still using WinXP and SP1 (service pack 1).

Omega's newest drivers would not install (required SP2) and I believe
ATi's 5.13's require SP2 also. I'm not ready to update to SP2 quite
yet.

Does anyone know the lastest/best Omega (or ATI) drivers, that were
made to work best with SP1?

The new video card is used mainly for gaming, and a good mix of higher
performance and nice graphics are preferred.

Thanks,

ATI have specified that SP2 is required for quite some time and you will
have to go back probably to last years drivers which wont recognize your
card. SP2 has been around for ages and is fine plus your system is at risk
not being up-to-date. So whats the problem - got a dodgy copy of WinXP that
you cant update without verification?

I'm using Cat 5.11 with my AIW X800XT, under WinXP SP1. No problems so
far....

This is why I dislike the usenet....

I had tested 5.12's and although they installed, it stated they too
were designed for SP2.

I'll give the 5.11's a try.

Thanks!

The 5.12 Catalyst drivers with standard Control Panel should work well.

Do yourself and US a favor and upgrade to SP2. People who don't update their
system make it easier to spread viruses and be zombie machines. As a added
benefit you'll won't have this problem.

Great to hear! It's nice to know there are 2 Omega/ATI driver
choices, using SP1.

I use Ray Adams Sys Tray (tray control panel), as it's so portable
and powerful.

Thanks a bunch (from a 1st time ATI user)

I may try the update sometime (SP2), as my backups of XP are good,
and very quick to restore if needed.

Any idea how large XP would grow, with the SP2 update (100's of
megabytes?).

Hardly any at all. Most of SP2 is actually replacement files. It does add
the Security Center and firewall which is not much as far as space goes. I
really do recommend the update if for nothing else than security reasons.

This depends on how you Install XP SP-2. There will be a time during the
install that will ask if you want to save the files from SP-1 so that you
may go back to it if you don't like SP-2.

If space Is a problem then there is one or two ways this can be done. If you
have a usb or another hard drive then select a folder on one of them drives.
IE: Old SP-1 files. If no other drive, and you don't care about going back,
then select to not backup the files. Going this route. You can never go back
to SP-1... Space of the files saved for SP=1 rollback is approx. 300-400
megs.

Don't forget to delete the Install file once you convert.

I'm not sure..but I was exactly like you and determined to NOT update after
hearing about all the software that got 'broke' with it. All the software has
been patched by now and it really wasn't a big deal as it was made out. I
ordered the free CD from M$ and got it within a week. Go for it. ;)
