BIOS updates are not needed at all.

Download ATiTool or ATi Tray Tools and crank the core and memory speeds as
high as they'll go, and use the artifact checker built into those two
utilities. The X800 and X850 series cards run at a constant clock speed
between 2D and 3D, so overclocking is simple.

The single biggest performance enhancement you can make is to AVOID the
Catalyst Control Center and its requisite.NET Framework. Just do a
drivers-only installation and use ATi Tray Tools to adjust all your
settings.

BTW, you might want to check out X850XT prices on Pricegrabber. They are
available for under $150 from reputable merchants.

Or download the Omega drivers. These have no CCC, and overclocking utilities
built in.

I'm just curious as to why the CCC degrades performance. Sure .NET is slow,
but that has zero effect on 3D performance. Not trying to flame, just
curious.

Maybe not on 3D performance, but certainly on system performance. Did you
even notice how much physical memory the CCC claims?

An extra 5-10 fps in games is usually imperceptible. However, the extra 30
sec or so spent on loading CLI.exe at startup is a big step backwards.

I'm currenlty using an X1600 Pro, Won the X800XL on EBay for $107, older
card, but should be faster with games.

Just installed the X800XL (dual DVI)
Now just would like to find a downloadable manual.

The manual is quite useless (worse than LeadTek's, for one thing). You can
download it off ATi's web site. The link to manuals is in the left
navigation bar where you normally select drivers to download.

Tried the ATI website, has general manual for the X800 series.
Could not find one on the X800XL Dual DVI.

That IS the manual included in the box for all X800 cards, XL or otherwise.
As I said before, it's quite useless.

The motherboard manual that came with my Asus A8R-MVP has a more extensive
section on ATi software than the video card manual...
