ATI X800xl Performance (Agp vrs PCI )

A

aj

Ok so I finally got my AGP x800xl card (256mb). Love it, but truth be
told not a great performance increase from my trusty ATI 9800 Pro
(128mb). Maybe I'm missing something but gaming performace (in HL2,
Far Cry, Doom3 etc) has increased only slightly. The biggest
difference was in textures and shadows. Anybody else experience this?

Question: Would the PCI express version of the is card outperform the
AGP version???? Thanks. AJ

A graphics card isn't the only thing that determines the performance of
games. Other factors, mostly the CPU and the amount of RAM, are important
too. Most likely you're now limited by sheer CPU-power which makes it
impossible for the graphics card to go faster, it's being held back by the
CPU.

However, if you've got a CPU like a Pentium IV 3.2ghz or something like
that - then something else must be wrong. On the other side, I don't think
you can realistically expect a huge performance increase from an X800XL over
a 9800 Pro.

Yours sincerely,

Like Brian said, game performance will only increase if the rest of your
system is up to snuff. Also, some games (e.g. Unreal) autoconfigures itself
at installation. So, if you change the video card, it's best to re-install
the game as well.

The X800XL can be twice as fast as the 9800Pro in fillrate-limited
situations. One way or the other you should see a drastic improvement at
high resolutions with 4x AA enabled.

Nope. They perform exactly the same.

No.

Yea, all benchmarks show no difference in performance between AGP and
PCI-E versions. I had a salesman BS me when he said PCI-E provides
about a 10fps increase over AGP version of the same card. I walked out
of the store and bought my vid card elsewhere.

When you run games at resolutions in excess of 1024x768 and with video
options (FSAA,etc) enabled, the difference will be readily apparent.

And as it stands, the agp version seems to under perform.
Running benchmarks produce good scores, both types matching eachother.
Comes to gaming though, ppl have to suffer 20fps in hl2 and 30 fps in Css
or
doom3.

Check above link for more of this problem.

The link you supplied above seems to suggest an issue with some
mobo/CPU/X800 card combos - not that the AGP X800 cards themselves 'under
perform'...

I don't see anything in that link that states that the AGP version is
slower than the PCI-E version. The guy mentions that Brothers In Arms
only runs at about 20fps. I just bought BIA yesterday and on my X800XL
AGP card it is running very smooth. I didn't benchmark it but it is
running way above 20fps. One guy said to upgrade from an 865 chipset
mb to 875 chipset mb to fix it. There is hardly any difference between
the two chipsets. I have the 875 chipset but the 865 performs about
the same.

Well, that's all fine to know. :)
However, the thread starter does have slow performance,so maybe he finds
something in that link.
That's why i posted the link,i have nothing to gain or loose since i use a
x850pro pci-express card.

pci vs agp is not much more in performance its about 3percent increase. I
would stay with agp
