X1600 pro card won't install

Hi hope someone can help!

My PC:

Gigabyte K8 Triton motherboard
AMD Sempron 3400+
1GB RAM

When I installed the drivers that came with the Powercolor X1600 pro
(512mb) onto a fresh XP installation the computer started into windows
OK but after a few moments it restarted itself. To start with I
thought this was part of the installation, but it started to hang and
restart anywhere between the 'Welcome' screen and after a few minutes
of being in windows. Having uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers
and taking the card out and putting it back in I'm now at a point
where it won't get to the 'Welcome' screen before it freezes. Without
any drivers installed the screen is very fuzzy and doesn't refresh
itself properly so its really hard to use even in safe mode. My next
move would be to reinstall windows but I would need to find a copy of
it first.

Can anyone here give me any ideas what I should try next?

I should point out that the motherboard does not have any video output
of its own and my monitor is fine (its connected to my laptop as I
speak!)

What wattage PSU do you have?

What do you see in Device manager under 'Display Adapters' - is there
anything about vgasave?

I had issues with the Sapphire equivalent which turned out eventually
to be an incompatibility with a Happauge WinTV PCI card.

Hiya thanks for the reply.

The display adapters show 'Radeon X1600' and 'Radeon X1600 Secondary'.
I also have a 600w PSU so I'm guessing that's fine!

That card requires at least a 300 watt power supply or more. I have
that card and had to replaced my power supply with a 400 watt one.
Card works fine now.

Just as a bit of info, I have a 'Live' Linux CD (Slax) which is able
to display everything fine with no problems at all...

OK a update for you.

I managed to uninstall the drivers from safe mode. This is not easy as
the screen is very distorted where the 'ghosts' of windows stay open
with lots of red and green edges. Just restarted into normal mode and
Windows has detected the card, flashed up a blank screen, and now all
the colours are fine. So I'm guessing it's a driver issue? The
resolution is something like 800x600 so its low, the last time I got
it back to this stage I tried to put the resolution up and it sent
Windows burning to the ground.

As I type after a restart the mouse icon came up briefly in a lower
resolution to above and vanished. Looks like its crashed again

Are you sure there is nothing in your system from an old video card? How
large is your PS?
I ran my 1600XT on a 460w without any problems. Now at 600w with a X1950 CF
Edition.

Windows was installed using a nVidia card so I'm hoping that
reinstalling XP with my ATI will solve the problem...

I'm running an x1600 XT with a 300 watt PSU....so I don't think its
necessarily a case of not enough PSU.

I have managed to reinstall windows. On first boot up i got a blue
screen saying that the file ati2dvag was stuck in an infinate loop. So
I start the PC in safe mode and get the message that the cd cannot
find the hardware. So when i browse the cd it wont install until I
have set up the display with a standard VGA driver

Try setting to VGA driver in the add hardware wizard. This subject ahs come
up in the last month or 2 and that didn't work for them. Don't recall what
finally worked for them. If someone who knows doesn't respond, google the
group for "VGA driver"

I don't think you need to do this (reload Windows). I would hope that
you did a nice uninstall of the Nvidia drivers prior to swapping out the
old card though.

Nobody has asked you what driver release was supplied to you on the
Powercolor CD, but you are free to get and try and alternate driver
direct from ATi. In fact, I strongly suggest that you do this.

Forgive my ignorance of your board/card, but is this a PCI-E or AGP
card? There may be system BIOS settings that can be altered to help
your problem.

Does this card require auxialliary power?

Right, lets start at the top, its an AGP card.

Complete format did not do anything as with no drivers installed it
constantly crashes the PC on start up above 800x600. The graphics are
also really off colour and the screen does not refresh properly.

With the drivers installed I might sometimes see a flash of the curser
before the 'Welcome' screen before it vanishes and crashes. The driver
number seems to start with an 8, can't tell you any more then that
because of the graphics problems above. I have tried drivers 7.2 and a
6.x something as well.

The card requires its own power connecter (I believe this has
something to do with converting a PCI-E chipset to AGP).

I don't have another computer to test it in, as the other one I have
only has PCI or ISA slots, which is fine for the Voodoo Banshee card
it has but not much use for my current card!

I actually have the card and everything boxed up and ready to go as I
can't think of anything else to try. I suppose it might be the
motherboard throwing a fit for some reason, it's a Gigabte GA-K8VT800
(2.0) by the way.

It's a shame really, but there you go!
