Wrong service pack patch installed?

Hi,

Trusting the HP "System Health Scan" and it's suggestions, it might be that
I installed an update for service pack 2 that wasn't intended for my model of
laptop (a Pavillion 5000-series).

The thing is I'm not actually sure I installed it: there is a folder in
c:/swsetup called sp34118 with a nuber of files in it, suggesting I did. But
when I ran the health scan now it STILL suggest I install that update, which
would suggest I maybe didn't...

Anyway. My question is:

1) Can it be harmful to install a update for sp2 that was not meant for my
laptop (but for a few compaq ones)?
2) Can I delete this sp34118 if Ive installed it? (You might already be
thinking add/remove here, but the thing is that not even Service Pack 2
ITSELF show up in that for me!
3) Is there a way to get access to a list of what updates, hotfixes, patches
etc that are runnibg in my computer?

Thanks in advance.

The presence of this folder can only show that you downloaded the patch.

Maybe or maybe not. Installing the patch is at least a waste of time.
2) Can I delete this sp34118 if Ive installed it? (You might already be

You should be able to remove the patch. However, some patches don't arrive
with well working removal tools.
SP2 can only show up under the Add/Remove Windows Components tab.
Executing winver from the Run command will tell you.
3) Is there a way to get access to a list of what updates, hotfixes,
patches
etc that are runnibg in my computer?
Www.Belarc.Com has such a tool. You ought to run this tool every now and
then anyway.
Thanks in advance.

Thanks Jim for your answer, and for suggesting the nice belarc-tool.

But the problem is that it only shows updates starting with "KB". Not the
"SP"-ones.
And Service Pack 2 really doesn't show up anywhere in my add/removes; not in
the regular one nor in add/remove Windows components.

So I really don't know how to remove an upgrade, or even check if its
installed in the first place..

All of the KB updates belong to one SP or another.

You can determine which SP is installed on your computer by executing winver
from the Run box.
You can also determine which SP is installed on your computer by the listing
below the Operating System box on the first page of the output of Belarc
You can also determine which SP is installed on your computer by reviewing
the list of installed patches on the third page of the output of Belarc.

Note, that if you have SP2 installed, no KB patches for SP2 are listed.
Instead, the listing starts with the KBs that will be included in SP3 if and
when
it is released. Hence, if you don't see any KBs that are part of SP2, you
can conclude that SP2 is installed on your system Making this determination
with
winver is quicker though.

As for removing SP2, someone else will need to tell you how.

Thanks Jim, but I think you misunderstood me (and I don't blame you, since
I'm not that fluent in the SP-lingo :)

I do have SP2 installed, and I have no intention to remove it.
What I might have installed a few weeks ago was this:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsuppor...cc=us&swItem=ob-49452-1&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN

That upgrade was suggested when I ran the HP "system health scan" on my
laptop (it's supposed to suggest updates for your particular model).

But when I ran the system health scan a few weeks later, the same suggestion
showed up, and then I noticed that my model of computer was not listed among
the laptopes that this upgrade is meant for.

So now my problem is: I really can't recall if I actually installed the
sp34118.exe (which might not at all be intended for my laptop) or not. So I'm
looking for a way to: 1) check if I really installed it or just downloaded it
(its som many weeks ago that I dont remember, and it was in the middle of the
night...), an 2) IF I've installed it, and it can be harmful to my laptop,
I'm looking for a way to uninstall it.

And the thig is that belarc doesn't show patches that start with "sp..", AND
no "sp...":s are shown in add/remove - not even Service Pack 2 that I know I
have installed.

I misunderstood you... Did you look in the Add Windows component area of
Add/Remove for SP2?

If I am not mistaken, Belarc only lists Microsoft patches. It seems that
the patch you
are discussing was one written by HP; perhaps they have a way of determining
if you
have installed their patch. You might try installing it anyway; usually
doing so would cause
no harm, but I cannot be certain.

Another way is to examine the folder which contains the patch for programs.
You can then compare
the properties of the pograms in the folder to the properties of the
corresponding folder (customarily
one installs such things in the Program Files folder somewhere). The
properties section of a program
usually gives the creation date.

Yes, looked there but it dosn't show up there either.

I've tried to contact HP yesterday but now answer yet.

Brilliant idea. I did a search for folders changed the same minute as I
(maybe) did the installation. This is what showed up, except for the files
and folders in c:/swsetut that I mentioned earlier:

In "c:/program/intsallshield information" there is a folder that contains
roughly the same files as in the "sp34118" folder in c:/swsetup.
And in "c:/program/hewlett-packard" a folder was created in the same minute
called "ESU" that contains the file "ESUXP_Sp2Ver.dll"

Looks like I did install something after all, doesn't it?
