Write Failed - during a paging operation

Hi all,
I have Windows XP and I am unable to hook up an external hard drive to my
computer via any of my USB ports. It will copy anything over if it's under
like 20 seconds. If it's over that, I get an error that the write has failed
and my event log will create a bunch of these messages:

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: Disk
Event Category: None
Event ID: 51
Date: 8/19/2005
Time: 7:00:12 PM

Description:
An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk1\D during a paging operation.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Google for hard drive testing utilities (HD Tach for ex,) and see if you can
check your external drive; you might need to take the drive out of its
enclosure and hook it up internally.

Okay, Hmm... I do not understand how to decode this. Can anyone else help
me?

I cannot STAND Dell Support - so I refuse to call them. I have spent tons
of money on their support line and have never had them fix my issue. Does
anyone have a recommendation for me??

Well, I have the same problem with all of these pieces of hardware:

- A Western Digital 160 GB External USB Harddrive
- A 40 GB FireLite Smart Disk (External USB Drive)
- A 256 MB Dell Memory Key
- A 256 MB Lexar JumpDrive
- A 256 KB Attache Memory Key

It's sooo frusterating that I have purchased 5 different brands of drives
and none of them work. So, I don't think it's the external drive. They all
work on my HP PC (this is a Dell Demension 8400 that I am having the problem
with).

Mmm,
I'd be looking for - not necessarily in this order:

1. IRQ conflicts between USB and other devices. System Information should
display your IRQ settings. USB devices might be on the same IRQ with your
Audio or other PCI card or onboard device. Disable if possible (via Device
Manager) devices that are using the same IRQ - later you can try using
another PCI slot.
2. Legacy USB (1.0) versus USB 2.0 - as enabled/disabled in BIOS. Try each
setting.
3. USB chipset drivers - provided either via XP SP2 or OEM (Dell) or chipset
manufacturer (Intel, Nvidia, Via?). Check in Device Manager what USB chipset
you have and update their drivers.
4. Try another USB port, or hook up via Fireware if available.
5. System power states - standby interfering with USB, for ex.
