Would you like to open a copy?????

Hello I have a problem with my Word on Office 97.
Everytime I open a new document, the little helper icon
says "filename.doc is being used by Nik (ie, my
username). Would you like to open it as a copy?"

I am the only one who ises my computer so does anyone
know how I can stop the help icon from asking me this
question everytime I open a new document and let me open
it up as normal?

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.
