I wouldn't

I have 2 reasons for not going with Dell:-
1. I used to have one on ym desk at work, it was rubbish and Dell
support was awful;
2. Dell is always bombarding me with junk (snail) mail and won't stop,
even though I shut down my business 4 years ago.

I wouldn't buy a server from them. They don't sell Opterons at all and
you can build or buy a dual Xeon system for about half the price of an
equivalent Dell.

Low end desktops are borderline, if you want Windows then the Dells are a
very good deal. If you don't want Windows at all then the prices are still
pretty competitive with a white box.

Laptops I would buy. It's hard to buy a laptop without and OS so the
possibility of saving the cost of Windows isn't there. Dell's service is
good. The LCD on my Inspiron 5000 died a few weeks before the extended
warranty expired and Dell had a service person show up at my house within
24 hours to replace the screen.

They DO sell a desktop w/o a Microsoft OpSys...comes with one of the free
Linux versions.

How many did you buy from them? I bought ONE laptop from them about a year
and a half ago and the only email/snail-mail/telegrams/candygrams/singing
telegrams that I've ever gotten from them has been a response to something I
initiated (usually an emailed question). Of course, the Sunday newspaper
often has a Dell flyer in it, but I don't take that personally as everyone
who buys a newspaper gets one! <g>

I didn't buy anything from them. But they still (keep) bombarding me
with marketing mail. That's the problem.

My personal policy is that any company that stoops so low as to
automatically include newly registered businesses in their direct
mailing campaigns is NOT going to get my custom.
To make matters worse, in my case Dell keeps sending junk to my former
company secretary who was actually based at another location, so Dell
didn't take much care about extracting the information from the list
of company incorporations in the first place if it made such an
obvious mistake.
IMO it's just such an invasion of privacy.
Freedom of information is one thing, but violation of privacy is
another.

You can buy a server from them with no operating system or with Linux but
not a desktop or a laptop. The Lindows version that you are thinking of is
available only in Italy and it's through a third party.

I don't think it was a server (it was only $319)...I believe it was a
variation of the Dimension 2400...whatever it was, I saw it on their website
within the last 7 days.

But is it significantly cheaper than buying it WITH the MS bundle?

I wouldn't mind one of their latitude laptops, but I don't think I'd
buy it unless it was through a company. Other then that, hell no,
build my own desktops, and I'm not stoping.

and that also goes for my EVIL twin! Yes, with Schizophrenia, you are

We build our own white boxes! We install Debian, in ~20 minutes, from a

If you are going to buy instead of building your own.Than dell is the
one to buy.I have a dell that is 6 years old and has never give any trouble.

So, based on the fact that one dell PC has never given trouble in 6 years the entire world should buy dell? :)
