Hi,

I have just install XP Home Edition 2002, based edition, which means does
not have any service pack.
However after installation, and when I tried to hook up to the net to do
windows update, the system got infected b worm and keep sending data out and
IE keep popping out.

What patch should I download fromn other PC and install in this new system
in future before connecting it to the net?

I have clean the hard drive with another system, but I'm afraid to hook it
back to the net, afraid the same thing will happen again.

Thanks for any help.

Since this is a brand new installation, your best bet would be to
re-install it. While it is possible to remove some viruses, the
cleaning action is often based on guesswork. It can leave your
machine scarred, same as people get scarred from small pox,
leaving you with a compromised operating system.

After reloading Windows, install a virus scanner and a firewall
before connecting the system to the Internet.

Activate the Windows Firewall. Do that before connecting any PC to the
internet and until you purchase or download a better firewall like Zone
Alarm. If your copy of XP Home Edition was purchased recently, it has
service pack 2 installed. Go to Start>All Programs>System Tools>System
Information to check your Windows version.

With your system protected by the basic Windows Firewall, go to the Windows
Update website and install all critical updates.

HELLO , Thats whats nice bout purchacing hard copies of an Anti-Virus , and
a few anti - spyware CD's ... protection first . After the Operating System
CD and Recovery CD is completely installed , load the A/V and Anti - spyware
.. Manualy run a "Full" system scan with the Anti-Virus program . If
applicable > Load your I.S.P. CD {Should be provided by your I.S.P.} . You
will be online at this time . {Then} Go to Microsoft.com and load the SP2 ,
that will also give you updtaed "Internet Explorer 6" . Get ready for a pile
of updates ... 2 hours about .

HI Kevin/Pegasus,

Thansk for your reply.
I have used any earlier version of installation that does not comes with
service packs.
Any specific hotfix that I can download to burn in cd and install in the
new system before connecting it to the net?

or can is it enough just to downlad the Service pack 2 and install it?

Thanks again

And in a few minutes the computer may be infected again.
You forgot the firewall, probably the most important protection for a new
computer before connecting to the network.

There is also usually no need fore the ISP software.
Windows XP makes the connection very well.
Those CDs sometimes come with spyware or other unnecessary software, a free
gift from your ISP.

Since it is a new installation, start over with a Clean Installation:
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/cleanxp.htm

BEFORE physically connecting the network equipment, enable/install a
firewall:
http://support.microsoft.com/Default.aspx?kbid=283673
This single step will go further initially protecting your computer than
anything else.

Install Service Pack 2:
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/spackins.htm
Follow with all other Critical Updates:
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/update.htm
Consider Microsoft Update:
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/msupd.htm

Install antivirus and an antispyware program

Make sure everything is updated and keep them all updated:

Hey Jupitor,

Have you got any plans to provide a list of all updates on your
wonderful website since Windows SP2 was released?

Also, have you got a command how one could make a list of updates to
compare with your list when it is available?.

Thanks.

firewall . I failed to add "Set up Firewall" . Ty Jupiter Jones .
