Hi everyone,

Recently my win xp sp2 sys was hit by a worm which disabled access to
registry, msconfig. When I tried to access these my system restarted
automatically.
But I was able to remove the worm manullay in win xp's Safe mode with
command line mode but still when I try to access registry editor or
msconfig, my system does automatically restart but I can not accress system
registry tool regedit or msconfig.
Any help in this regard will be highly appreciated and I thank u in advance
for u r time and effort.

Looks like the worm has either removed/renamed the applications or set the
Restriction bit for these in the registry.

1. First, ensure you have these apps:

C:\WINDOWS\pchealth\helpctr\binaries\msconfig.exe
C:\Windows\regedit.exe
C:\Windows\system32\regedt32.exe

See if you have these applications.
Right-click, Properties, Version ... what does it say?
Make sure that they are only the one's. Try looking for regedit.* in
C:\Windows
Ensure that the version is a valid Microsoft Version. There should be no
regedit.com, regedit.bat, ... only regedit.exe
If there are move them to a temp folder.

If so, try to execute c:\Windows\regedit.exe (use full path) in Start Menu |
Run.

There are anti virus News Groups specifically for this type of discussion.

Please use the following Multi AC Scanning Tool. It can be used to make sure you are indeed
clean of malware and it will also undo the Registry policy changes malware make to limit
your functionality.

Download MULTI_AV.EXE from the URL --
http://www.ik-cs.com/programs/virtools/Multi_AV.exe

To use this utility, perform the following...
Execute; Multi_AV.exe { Note: You must use the default folder C:\AV-CLS }
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close

Execute; C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT
{ or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS }

NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to go through your
FireWall to allow it to download the needed AV vendor related files.

C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT -- { or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS}
This will bring up the initial menu of choices and should be executed in Normal Mode.
This way all the components can be downloaded from each AV vendor's web site.
The choices are; Sophos, Trend, McAfee, Kaspersky, Exit this menu and Reboot the PC.

You can choose to go to each menu item and just download the needed files or you can
download the files and perform a scan in Normal Mode. Once you have downloaded the files
needed for each scanner you want to use, you should reboot the PC into Safe Mode [F8 key
during boot] and re-run the menu again and choose which scanner you want to run in Safe
Mode. It is suggested to run the scanners in both Safe Mode and Normal Mode.

When the menu is displayed hitting 'H' or 'h' will bring up a more comprehensive PDF help
file. http://www.ik-cs.com/multi-av.htm
