world wide web publishing service shuts down unexpectedly

Every few hours the world wide web publishing service shuts down
unexpectedly. This then forces the smtp services to shut down and the outlook
clients can now longer connect to exchange. The server version is 2000 adv
svr, the exchange vers is exchange 2000

Check Event Viewer for error details.

Was the first thing i checked. This has been going on for a while and i have
got round the problem by setting the restart service options. It is very
strange as a an error, warning or info entry never appears in any of the logs

Then the event log files are corrupt. The temporary fix;
You might try changing the file properties to "Overwrite as needed"

Then; Control Panel|Administrative Tools|Services|Event Log Service|General,
set the "Startup Type:" to "Disabled" restart the pc, then delete (or move)
the corrupt *.evt file(s) from %systemroot%\system32\config then set the
Event Log Service "Startup Type:" back to "Automatic", restart for effect.

The more permanent fix;
