Shut Down Unexpectedly

How do I fix this problem. My new Dell Inspiron 531S shuts down unexpectedly
several times a day. When I follow the Microsoft link to "correct this
problem" Microsoft wants me to download an update, but then says the update
doesn't apply to my computer...This is the gist of the error report:

What specific update does it try to take you to? If an update is already
applied to your system, it will usually say that the update doesn't apply.

The 9f bluescreen error below is suggesting that a device has timed out
blocking an IRP.

I have the same problem. My computer just shuts down a couple times a day for
no apparent reason. When it starts up it says something like Windows
experienced an unexpected shutdown and provides the info below, it does not
promt for any updates.

What do you mean the error indicates a device has timed-out? How can this be
fixed?

Thanks

You have a similar problem, but not the same problem.

That's a kernel mode exception. You might be able to suss this out by
determining what you are doing when you get this issue and thus isolating
out what system component/driver is throwing an exception (failing).
Failing that, you would likely want to take this to a tech-savvy computer
shoppe who can run the system with a debugger/kernel debugger attached.

Thanks zachd,

So does that mean it's a HW item that's connected to my computer or could it
also be a program? I recently added some RAM, could that be causing this?

thanks again!!

It does say that the update doesn't apply, after I have downloaded it and
installed it.

What does "The 9f bluescreen error below is suggesting that a device has
timed out blocking an IRP." mean?

I don't know what technical level you're on (believe me, you're light years
ahead of my parents), so I'll assume you're 'fairly but not crazy
knowledgable' -

That's a grand question that would involve lots of "fun" research on drivers
and I/O request packets.

The short version of that boring investigation is that there's a driver or
device that seems to be failing on your system.

Which specific update does it point you to? That might be somewhat
informative.

Running a RAM test might not be a bad idea.

I'm not adept enough to point out with certainty where that would be coming
from. It would not be likely to be a normal program. It could be a driver,
some low-level program, or the hardware. Having somebody looking at this
with a kernel debugger attached is probably the quickest way to the exact
solution. =\
