Workstation user renaming problem

We have a single Windows 2000 server, fully service packed and
security patched.

Recently, we had an employee leave and rehired a replacement.

The XPPro (also fully SP'd and patched) workstation logs in to our
domain and runs a script mapping three shared folders on the server.
The "My Documents" folder is on the server, and set to make available
offline on the workstation.

I changed the users' login name on the server using Active Directory's
'rename' feature, I changed the user's private folder using 'Rename'
as well. I reset the user's private folder security privilieges to the
renamed user name.

But when I went to the XP workstation to login, although I could login
as the renamed user on the domain, not only was I not able to access
the renamed user private folder, but the OLD user private folder
appeared. Also, I could not access either of the two other globally
(group Everyone) shared folders.

I restored workstation functionality by renaming to the old user's
name in Active Directory and the private folder.

Then I tried to create a new user (rather than rename), move the
documents to the new user private folder, and then deleted the old
user and old user private folder. I was able to login ONCE and
successfully access everything on the server properly. BUT the next
time I went to login, it could find none of the new user's shared
folders, and instead showed only the OLD user private folder (which I
had deleted on the server).

As of now, I've changed everything back to the old user so my new
employee can work.

What did I do wrong? And how do I do this correctly in the future?

Thanks in advance,

I think by renaming the user and the folder synchronization got confused.
You may have to turn off the offline folders first before renaming an
account and folder.
Your second approach should have worked but I think the folder
synchronization had already done the damage. Try turning off offline folders
the rename the account and folder then enable offline folders again.
