How do I change colour from a white sheet to black?

I'm sure there is more to this question but................

For now......................CTRL + a(twice in 2003) to select all cells.

Format>Cells>Pattern.

Select the black option button.

Just out of curiosity ...... I know the end result is the same, but is there really a difference (in other circumstances) if I click on fill colour icon and choose black?

I heard about some issues on ctrl + a for 2003 but forgot what they were. I clicked once and I seemed okay. Is this temperamental?
