Works vs. WordPerfect

steve

My newly purchased PC came preloaded with a trial version
of WordPerfect which I do not want to use. But whenever
I create a word document in Works and try to re-open from
My Documents, a message states that Windows cannot open
the file and needs to know what program created it.
I have uninstalled WordPerfect but still get this
message. Is there a way to eliminate this and/or make
Works my default word processor?

It's not a matter of a default word processor; there's really no
such thing.

One of two things is happening: either you are changing the file
extension of the files you create to a non-standard type, or
somehow Windows has lost the association for the file type.

Windows knows what program to open a file with because it has an
association between the extension and a program.

If the former problem, just stop changing the extension Works
gives you by default (and rename any files you've already
created).

If thats not the problem, the association is somehow screwed up;
right-click on a file you've created in Works, choose Open With,
choose Works from the list of programs, and check the box "Always
use this program...."

By the way, the word processor that comes with Works (unless it's
Works *Suite*, with Microsoft Word) is a very primitive one
compared with WordPerfect. It's your choice, of course, but you'd
almost certainly be better off with WordPerfect.

Steve,

You need to step back and think about this. WordPerfect is a powerhouse
of a program and makes Works look like a toy.

Presuming this is a .DOC file, you need to set up the association for
Works to use it. Easiest way to set that up is to right click such a
file, take Open with and then the 'Choose program' choice. In that do
*not* take anything offered, but take Browse, and browse to the works
..exe file you want to open - and check the 'always use this' box before
OK. That seems to get it over to the system that you mean it. Oddly
there does not seem to be a way provided in the program to refresh the
file association - you have to do it otherwise by running its setup
again and repairing the installation
