In a folder, R-Click: New: WordPerfect 12 Doc produces a 0-byte file

I'll begin by noting that this seems like a Windows problem rather than a
WordPerfect problem, since a complete uninstall/reinstall of WordPerfect
with Registry scrubbing and manual deletion of program file locations (in
Program Files and <user profile>\Application Data) did not solve the
problem.

Also, I do not have the problem with Quattro Pro (another app in the
WordPerfect suite).

To the problem:

In a folder, if I Right-Click: New: WordPerfect 12 Document, a 0-byte file
is created (New WordPerfect Document.wpd).

If I then try to open that file - without WordPerfect running - by
double-clicking on it, I get a WordPerfect error:
The file "...New WordPerfect Document.wpd", as specified in the
execution parameters, cannot be opened.

If I try to open that file - with WordPerfect running - by double-clicking
on it, or otherwise try to open the file from within WordPerfect, I get the
error:
Unknown file format.

For comparison, if I do the same to create a new Quattro Pro doc, a 4 KB
file is created and it opens fine.

Apart from the uninstall/reinstall, I also tried deleting the default
WordPerfect template so that it would generate a new one. That did not fix
the problem.

And since the first error message sounds like it involves DDE, I had a look
at the Windows Advanced File Type definitions for the Open action (there is
no Create or New action either for WordPerfect or Quattro Pro), and
WordPerfect and Quattro Pro definitions looked entirely equivalent with
these minor exceptions:
- For WordPerfect, the action name is &Open and is set as the Default
action, and the option to Browse In Same Window is inactive. Also inactive
is the Set Default button (you cannot undo Open as the Default action).
- For Quattro Pro, the action name is open and is not set as the Default,
the option to Browse In Same Window is active and selected, and the Set
Default button is available to use with the open action.

I wondered if the Windows File Type Open action is used to create the file
when R-Click: New is used in a folder, but I have just now deleted the
WordPerfect Open item, and the behavior is just as before. So Windows uses
another mechanism, and that is probably the issue here. Anyone know about
that?

By the way, I can R-Click: New and successfully create other file types.

Sound like your default wpt template is corrupt. Here's what I've found:

..wpt extension:
"Template for creating WordPerfect (.WPD) documents; typically a
pre-formatted document that can be used to create many similar documents,
such as resumes, business memos, mailing envelopes, etc."

Thanks, ju.c, but as I mentioned in my first post, I already deleted the
original default template to make WordPerfect generate a new one.
Furthermore, I observe that WordPerfect creates new documents just fine from
within the program, so I don't think the template itself is the problem.

Perhaps look in Folder Options, File Types, and in the entry for .wpd
lool in Advanced, New, Edit. Compare what you see there against the
entry for Quattro Pro. Windows simply calls the Program to create the
file, so there has to be something wrong with either the call, or the
way the program responds to it. If you don't see anything obvious, head
over to the Wordperfect support site and ask them.
