Not enough information from your end. No idea how you connect either way,
what operating systems (versions and service pack level) you have installed
on these systems, if you have a router/nat device on either end of the
transmission, what software firewalls - if any - you may have running, etc.

This may help you..

Then the link given will help you.

You have all the tools needed. You just need to put them all together.

1) Need to enable the remote desktop capabilities of your Windows XP
Professional PC.
2) Need to make sure the user(s) you will be connecting with either are
administrators or are in the remote desktop users group of the Windows XP
Professional PC.
3) Need to make sure said user(s) have good/strong password(s).
4) Need to open the remote desktop port on your Windows XP Professional
Firewall.
5) Need to forward the remote desktop port through your router/NAT device to
the internal IP of your Windows XP Professional system.
6) You *could* (to make it easier on yourself) setup your router/NAT device
with a dynamic DNS from (for example) http://dyndns.org/ - otherwise you
need to discover the external IP of your network (from your NAT/router
device.)
7) You need to find the remote desktop client on your laptop (Windows XP
Home system.) You can just do a start button --> run --> mstsc --> OK to
run it.
8) You can go into the advanced options of the remote desktop client to
create a default "profile" for your home connection - including performance,
local resources to connect to (printers and drives maybe) and screen size,
etc.
9) Then you need to test it.

The original link given can help you with much of that!
