I have inherited a lot of access databases. ALL refer to system.mdw under
c>windows>system32.....
I need to create .mdw file for each datbase. How do I create this and name
it as other thatn system.mdw? I do not want to use the default .mdw file.
Thanks

You would create new Workgroup Information Files (ie mdw files) using the
Workgroup Administration tool. How you open it depends on which version of
Access you're using. You would only need to do this if you're planning to
invoke user-level security. This being the case you would need to study
this if you haven't already:

faq.asp>

This tells you all you need to know about invoking user-level security.
Once you've digested that there's a step-by-step example on my website.

It is a common misconception that databases refer to MDW files. They
do not. It is the Access session, or particular instance of Access
running on your computer, that refers to an MDW file.

Each object in each secured MDB file has a list of accounts for which
various permissions are granted. These accounts reside in one or more
MDW files. Accordingly, you need to create one or more new MDW files
with exactly the same accounts as previously, and run Access using one
of those new MDW files. Of course, you must create the accounts using
exactly the same ID parameters as were used to create them in the
original system.mdw file, otherwise they will be considered to be
different accounts.

Question: why do you want a separate MDW file for each database? That
typically creates more maintenance problems than it solves. An
alternative would be to copy and rename the system.mdw file into a new
location, and just use that file, thus avoiding having to recreate all
the accounts.

See the website in my signature for additional information.
