Did not claim you do not. My first HDD was a MFM 65MB drive.
However technology has changed a lot since then and I do
know quite a few people that do not do regular surface scans
on their drives.

My first (and second) was an RLL 32meg drive

I'm one of those that don't do regular scans. I' lost a lot of file by a
Scandisk operation destroying a tone of file that were perfectly readable
before the scan. I don't have complete trust in the Scans that it won't
(again) try to fix what ain't broke.

No. It is downtime reduction and backup against disk failure.
It is not a general backup. Things like accidential deletion
or corruption (often noticed only later), wirus infection, etc.
happen and RAID1 does not help at all. A general backup does.

That's why I said "...kind of...".

Besides that......
The context has been lost here. I'm not talking about RAID practices in
general,..I'm taking about the specific OP's situation. This NAS "RAID
unit" is *not* the Storage Unit,...it *is* the "backup",...it *is* the
"second copy",...the "first copy" is the data on the PC's that is being
"backed up" to the NAS. So if we go the extra mile to backup the NAS then
we are backing up the backup. It has to "end" somewhere unless we are going
to backup the backup of the backup of the backup of the backup. We are
only dealing with the MyDocs and the Desktops on 7 machines in a Workgroup.

I am not talking about a filesystem scan, but a surface scan.
This is done typically by a long SMART selftest.
You cannot lose date with that. That some filesystem
scanners (especially those by Microsoft) are unsafe trash
is known.
