Work Group Desighn

I am New to this Group...

We have about 15-20 Work stations, And Also a Server Machine. I want to
setup small peer to peer net work (Work Group not a Domain) and a 3Com 24
port Switch (all cabaling have been done). Work stations are installed with
Win XP, Win 2000 and WIN ME, also Windows 2000 Server on Server Machine
(With ISA 2000).

We have broad band (wireless) internet connection. And also our domain is
hosted in a ISP site.

We actually planning for this LAN for following Purposes.
1. File Sharing (Access Database and some other files)
2. Printer Sharing
3. To access Internet for all users throgh the ISA.

So Please,

How can i Configure the server for this purpose and also in users machine.
If i assign static IP Address for Server and Each Machine is it advisable?
and what should be the IP address range and also what is the standard for
this type of small network.

secondly, If assign Static IP Address for each machine in the network
properties, what will be the DNS Server Address in Users machine.

Please some one help me this issue. it is very critical and Urgent for me.

Thanks in advance.

Nice to Join with your guys.

You'd better hire anyone for this setup. Newsgroups cannot replace neither
an education nor experience.

Hi - in addition to the other reply, which I think is a sensible one, I
suggest you consider implementing a domain model. Workgroups do not scale
well and are a PITA to adminster, back up, protect.

You can leave your website hosted externally - in fact I recomend it. And
see if you can upgrade ME to XP......

Normally you have a fairly simple network to configure and many users would use a
NAT/firewall such as a Netgear or Sonicwall depending on needs and the budget. ISA is
a great product but not the easiest for a novice to configure. Using ISA, your server
will need two network adapters - one for the internet and one for the internal lan.
Make sure that file and print sharing is DISABLED on the network adapter connected to
the internet and that the network adapter for the internal lan is at the top of the
list in network properties/advanced settings. I don't know what kind of wireless
broadband connection you are using but if you don't need the power and flexibility of
ISA, at least for now, you could connect all your computers to the internet using the
wireless router if you have a router. For more information on configuring ISA see the
link below.

http://isaserver.org/tutorials/quickstart.html

You can use a typical class C private address range such as 192.168.0.xxx with a
subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 being sure not to use host address of 0 or 255. You can
use either static or DHCP from your server or router if you use that instead. Usually
the xxx.xxx.xxx.1 is used for the default gateway as in 192.168.0.1 which may be the
internal IP address of the ISA server. You want your server to have static IP address
for the lan. Dns for a workgroup can be either the IP addresses of the ISP dns server
or possibly the default gateway address if it acts as a dns proxy which I believe ISA
and many routers can do. See the link below on tips to secure a small business
network. Good luck. --- Steve
