It says shareware - $19 - expires in 30 days. It does say that
downloading is free.

Methinks @Z got the wrong download link.

Go to his first link and scroll down to "Get the FREE download"

I downloaded
http://skycable.tucows.com/files6/wordweb.exe
(5.93 MB - 6,221,899 bytes)

"WordWeb Version 3.01
for Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000/XP
Free for personal use."

Sorry if misleading...

Btw,only new feature (other than a bigger words' database), from what I
can see:

under 'Option' menu, there is a 'Show' item giving 3 choices

- Pronunciations
- Usage examples
- Vulgar and offensive words

This last link brings you to tucows download, that says shareware.

WordWeb certainly appears to have gone shareware. I downloaded the
setup file and after deleting the old version of WordWeb, started to
install the new version. This is what greeted me:

Whichever it is I deleted the old and installed the new, but it still
shows up as v2.2 not 3.01 in 'about'.

Deleted or uninstalled? I simply installed the new over the old
(upgraded) and it shows 3.01 in the help about.

As for the freeware status, their web page <http://wordweb.info/free/>
says

"WordWeb is a cut-down version of the WordWeb Pro that is free
for personal use"

The download link at their page takes us to tucows.com, where the
program is listed as shareware with a price tag. But if you download
it from there and install it - the program help-about screen says free
for personal use, and so does the licence page in help file:

"You may use WordWeb indefinitely free of charge for personal
non-commercial use. All users may use it for thirty days for
evaluation purposes."

The Help about screen also have a button labeled "WordWeb Pro" that
brings up a page in the help file w/ info about how to purchase the
Pro version, which I take as another indication it is in fact the free
for personal use version I got. In short, it looks free to me - even
if their primary download site tucows.com says shareware.

Test at home: install the program, run it, exit, turn your Windows
time 31+ days forward, then run program again. No expiration?
Congratulation!

All the best,
Bjorn Simonsen

If you didn't uninstall first, you have to trash the remnant
"wweb17.wwd" (7.13MB)

Are you sure this version doesn't expire?
Thank you,

It's not expiring (see Bjorn Simonsen's post).

But there is this bothering "free version for 30 days for evaluation
purposes" when installing... So, about the exact Wordweb's ware status,
we'll prob'ly have to wait for the authors' reply to John Corliss
inquiry.

I did uninstall.
The download from the WW site was indeed v2.2.
Today I downloaded from TUCOWS and it was 3.01.
Strange.
