I used to use WordWeb, but then they changed it to run memory-resident.
So unless you leave it running all the time it's a double click to fire
it up, a double click to access it, type in your word and then right-
click and exit to kill it again.

So I switched to this:
Pardon2
http://www.softbear.no/pardon/introduction.shtml
Double click to start it, use it and "X" it to kill. AND it does
missing-letter type crossword-solving which you have to pay extra for in
WordWeb. AND it's got access to online dictionaries if the word you want
isn't onboard.

Interesting. All I have to do is double click on it to start it. It lets
me X out of it no problem.

Seems like WordWeb's resident task bar thing is optional; I just installed
2.2, and there was an option that was "not recommended", but an option
nonetheless. I open WordWeb only through a double-click and close it with
the 'X'.

Pardon2 looks interesting. Some things it lacks are synonyms/antonyms, but
it does have sample sentences, and being able to see the entire list of
words can be helpful if you don't know exactly how a word is spelled.

The crossword feature is amazing!

which is optional. just disable it...

not so. just create a shortcut to it in your quick launch bar. its
then just a single-click.

Are there any Win local front ends for dict.com? I run a little util
that puts a text box[1] in the equivalent of my Task Bar. Type or copy in
a word, and [Enter] pops up a window with definitions from various
sources at dict.com. Takes less then three seconds on my dialup. I
wasn't familiar with such an animal.

[1]It has a history dropdown, for when I look something up and have
already forgot what it said, five minutes later. :)
