i have some documents on a CD that i made on a windows 98 SE OS. when i try
to open them on windows XP home, with wordpad, i get a window which says "can
not load word for windows 6.0 files" please help!!

Word and Wordpad are two different programs. Wordpad cannot open Word
documents. Install Word or a Word-compatible program, or use s.o. else's
computer to open the files and save them as .rtf files (Wordpad can open
..rtf files).

WordPad can open and display Word documents ( .doc files.)
WordPad can not open files produced by the obsolete 'Word for Windows 6.0'.
That requires either 'Word for Windows 6.0' or the installation of filters
in later versions of 'Word'.

'WordPad' can open and display files produced by more recent versions of
'Word' ( .doc files). 'WordPad' can not open and display files produced by
the obsolete 'Word for Windows 6.0' (introduced 10 years ago.)

You can open and display 'Word for Windows 6.0' .doc files with a modern
version of 'Word' with filters installed for the purpose (from the
installation disk.)

You have been given some good but some completely wrong advice about
Wordpad and Windows 6.0 files. Get the correct information direct from
"the horse's mouth".

These4 KB articles explain why SP2 prevents Wordpad from opening these
files, how you can reinstate the ability, and why there is some risk in
doing that. If you have Word installed, you could just associate .wri
file with Word instead of Wordpad.
