I'm using Windows XP on this laptop. Word takes several seconds to open
whereas on my desktop using Win 98SE, Word opens instantly. Why is that and
how can I hasten the opening on this machine?

Thanks

Do you have a printer driver installed locally and selected as the default
or does Word depend on a network printer? Is there anything else related to
Word that depends on a network connection that is not always present (such
as a shortcut in Word's Startup folder to a Workgroup Templates folder on
the network)?

Yes, there is a printer driver installed on both machines. I use them both
for printing but there is no network.

As for other things that would require a network... I don't know of
anything.

Could it be Zone Alarm?

In that case I haven't a clue; perhaps XP is doing more error-checking, or
it could be the work of your AV software?
