After completing a hp pc system restore, I am unable to open any Word
document that I had saved prior to the restore. Should I have backed up my
system beforehand or is there something else I can do to retrieve my
documents?

There is one other window that pops up while trying to open my files, it
states:
"Your AutoCorrect file, C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application
Data\Microsoft\Office\MSO1033.acl, could not be saved. The file may be
read-only, or you may not have permission to modify the file."
Any idea what this means?

If you simply restored Windows using its system restore, your documents
should not be affected. You could start by undoing the restoration.
If you restored the complete system from the recovery disc that came with
your PC, your documents and all your personal data are gone.
Regular backing up of your important data is essential.
