all word files changed to wordpad - need to restore

I used word pad to open one document. Afterward, all word files were changed
to wordpad. I have tried to restore to a prior date without success. I know
that I can open a wordpad doc with word; but would like to restore all word
files back to word. How can this be done? I use windows office xp
professional and have all automatic updates from microsoft.
