word won't print document with background colour

Hello
I have created a word document for sales litrature and added a Back ground
with fill effects. This added a gradient colours across the pages and gave
the desired effect. However if I print it our convert to a PDF the pages
revert to a white background.
Is it possible to keep this back ground effect am I missing a selection box
or something.

In Word 2003, click on Tools | Options | Print | check the
"Background colors and images" box | OK.
