Word StarOffice File Type Conflict

I had StarOffice 7 and 8 beta on my computer but completely uninstalled them
and installed Word 2002. However, whenever I save a document in Word, as a
..doc Word file the file saves as a SOffice.doc file and the file icon on the
desktop is looks like a RTF file. I've taken the obvious steps: made sure
StarOffice is completely uninstalled and set my Save settings in Word to .doc
Word files but something is overriding this. Any suggestions for this
annoying quirk.

G'Day Tweedicus,

I had Office 2002
I installed Star Office 7
I upgraded to Office 2003
I installed the Star Office 8 Beta
I uninstalled the Star Office 8 Beta, when the Beta program finished.
I have NO problems.

Some things to be clear about:
Something ELSE has occurred or been done.
A .doc is a .doc - When you use Star Office to save as .doc, the
result is a .doc - a Word .doc!
If Star Office stuffs up, then you have a corrupt Word .doc or
whatever, but if it succeeds then it's .doc is indistinguishable
from a Word .doc! Word will open and edit it without a whimper.

If you have set the default in Tools>Options | Save (tab) to "Word......doc"
then that's what you are getting.

Some things to check:
Close Word and all other Applications.
Open Windows Explorer.
Tools>Folder Options
File Types (tab) - wait for Explorer to create the list.
Scroll down to DOC under "Extensions" and select it.
Check the "Details for 'DOC' extension" panel
It should say Microsoft Word.
(If it doesn't, click "Change..." (button) and select Word from
the list,
and check the files beneath DOC down to DOTHTML, otherwise
LEAVE THEM ALL ALONE.)
If you do not like the Icon (for DOC), click "Advanced"
(button), then
Click "Change Icon..." (button) in the Edit File Type
dialog. Choose
an Icon, then "OK" (twice).

Pat,

Cheers for the response; good on yer.

It worked, now all my doc files are native to Word and the icons have changed.

Thanks.
