Word replaces certain letters with characters

Hello, I have a user that typed a paper using Word 2003 and for some reason
Word changed some of the letters to characters. For instance wherever he had
quotes the left quote was replaced with the @ symbol and the right quote was
replaced with an asterik. I don't know what caused this but I imagine some
student changed the setting as a prank. How can I fix this??? Thanks!!
 
My guess is that the student used Word Perfect to create the paper and that
the translation between the documents was the problem.
