Word program is responding very slowly

What can I do to fix my Word 2007 program. It is responding very slowly.
For example, when I type it is taking forever for the typed text to show in
the document. Any action I perform processes very slowly, from making a
table, to typing, to formatting. Any action, it doesn't matter. I am
working in a template which I had downloaded from the Microsoft Office
website. Any suggestions on what the problem is and/or how this can be fixed?

Is this happening only in Word, or are other applications also slowed
down? If the latter, you may have a virus or malware interfering with
your computer.
