Word 2002 opening slowly

Word is opening very slowly along with opening documents. It also takes a
while to close down. I'm not a regular user of word so I don't know when this
started. Has there been any recent changes that may be causing this problem.?

No, not that I'm aware of. Perhaps you have antivirus software scanning too
heavily? Does the bottom status bar or anything on the screen indicate
"waiting for scan" or similar?

Not enough info to guess very much; lots of possibilities. How slow is
slow, how large a document? every document or only certain ones? types of
documents? Etc.

I solved 2/3rds of my problem by shutting off the word plugin in Norton
Internet Security. This fixed the slow startup and the slow loading of all
documents. The only problem left is the very slow shut down About 30 sec's.
