Word Problem--Paragraph Sign on Word Document

I was downloading information from the Internet and a
paragraph sign came onto my blank Word screen. The
paragraph sign is affecting anything I try to paste onto
the screen and I can't get it off. How can I go back to
the standard Word paragraph format ? I have Windows 98 and
WORD 2002.
