WORD/PhotoShop freeze computer when printing-Help!

What to do!

When I try to print using my HP 960c printer from either PhotoShop 7.0
or Word2000, computer freezes.

I am running Win98SE, 256mg RAM, 2.0 GHz Pentium 4. Printer on
parallel port.

This has just happened the last day or two. I ran AntiVirus program
over EVERYTHING. No viruses.

I did do some tweaking of the printer because the cartridges were
giving me problems.....well, actually, I ran out of ink before I
realized that was the problem.Wondering if I screwed up something.

BUT still can print from other programs. So doesn't seem as though I
DID mess up something.

Assume I should reinstall the printer. But why when it prints from
other programs????? Guess I am missing something somewhere!
Any other suggestions?

Yianni,

You are kidding, right? My Harddrive????? I'm not using 15% of my
primary hdd and less than 10% of my secondary.

Free up some space? I am the housekeeping queen of the world. I am
constantly cleaning up my HDDs: removing junk, unused programs,
unwanted cookies, email message, sound files, videos, etc., etc.

If you are not kidding, I am curious as to what this would do? I have
used these programs for years with no problem. This is the first time
this has ever happened to me. There is something going on that I am
not aware of.........and I'm looking for a solution.

Didn't mean to be so abrupt! But that was too simple a solution to be
true.

Thanks for trying.

I told you, becasue some times the temporary files need a space about 0.5 to
1 GB. In the cases there isn't much space I have seen much delay on the
computer. I have seen the same problem in a pc with a 6GB hdd and 1GB free
space. As you said the problem is not that.
It couldn't be the driver because from other programs you print ok. How much
is the size of the primary and secondary hdd?
When you print from Word or Photoshop, big temporary files are created from
both the programs and the driver (spooler).
Try this, print to file, then send the created file to the printer from a
DOS session with the command
COPY filename.ext lpt1
Determine when your computer freezes.

Well, there may be a problem with the amount of data being sent to the
printer. This is a program specific problem. I have Thumbs Plus and
when you try to print a 32 meg scanned negative file, you can go eat
dinner and maybe you will have a finnished print after dinner. But
the same file in Photo Shop it just prints out.

Does it happen with every document? If you open word and print a single
word in a standard font ("test"), does the computer freeze?

You say that this problem has just began. What change did you make to
your computer between when it printed and when it stopped? Any software
you installed? Any changes to any settings on any drivers or control
panels?

Word and Photoshop don't seem to have much in common in the way they
handle print jobs, at least not superficially.

Try this: install a generic postscript printer driver ("add printer").
Try to print a simple document, and select "print to file" from Word's
print dialog. If you can print a document to a file using the postscript
driver, then that would make me suspect it's specific to your printer. If
you can't print to the new driver, then you know you have a more general
problem with your computer.
