Word Perfect to MS Word conversions

When I convert a document in Word Perfect to MS Word, the size on my disk
is doubled. Since my friends want me to send files in MS Word, I want to
keep the size of the files down. Any suggestions?

MY Word Perfect is version 10; My MS Word is version 2,000.

Use Winzip or some other similar compression utility to shrink the file
before sending it.

Than you for your suggestion! That will solve my problem. But I do wonder
why MS Word doubles Word Perfect file sizes!

My guess is that the conversion is to RTF which is not a particularly
compact file type. What happens if you open it in Word then save it again
from Word?
What happens if you convert the WP file in Word?
