Word Options won't save

Whenever I amend the options in Word, such as the view (adding the "ruler"
feature to the print layout) or adding something for autocorrect to catch, it
works for as long as the session is open. However, once that session is
closed and Word is reopened, the options that I selected are forgotten. Any
tips?

Add-ins can sometimes prevent your Options settings from being saved (or
change them), but in the case of the ruler, I nearly drove myself crazy with
that (in Word 2003), even putting a Ruler button on the toolbar so I could
turn it back on more easily, until Beth Melton pointed out that, if you have
chosen not to display the ruler in Print Preview, then every time you switch
to PP, the next window you open will open without the ruler. Since I
restored the ruler to PP, I've had NO problems (guess I could get rid of
that toolbar button).
