When attempting to open files stored in my offline files folder - word open
and closes these files slower than other files - any reasons why?

What version of Word/Office? In Office 2000 (not sure about later versions),
there was a problem that Outlook's Journaling feature would cause slow
opening/closing of files in Word and Excel due to its need to keep track of
things. The solution then was to turn off journaling of Word/Excel files in
Outlook.

I don't know if this is the problem in your case. But, this is one cause
that does come to mind.

I'm using Office 2003 Proffessional - on a windows XP Pro machine with 1.00GB
of Ram - I'm tried your solution below but journaling of word/excel files
hadn't been turned on. You are quite right though it is also slow opening and
closing them in excel.
Any other suggestions?

If you are running Norton AV, uncheck its office plug-in option.
