Word locks up when opening files

Doh, tried to post this yesterday and cant find it in the lists now

I've been using Word 2000 on my Win98 laptop for 3 years and this week its gone awry - basically I can open Word, but then when I try to open a file it just locks up. It is showing that it is Requesting virus scan, so I tried to scan the laptop for viruses (no probs there) and I lowered the Macro security to low (didnt do anything surprise, surprise). When I Ctrl-Alt-Del. a dialogue box pops up saying the system is dangerously low in resources, although everything looks fine (I freed up HD space to 1.7Gb). Has anyone else experienced this problem and can offer advice please? Maybe I should uninstall and reinstall Word? Thanks.

If you are running Norton AntiVirus, disable the Office Plug-in.

Hmmm, seems to work for some docs, but not for others, but not sure what the difference is.
