word layout question

Can someone explain to me why (or the many reasons why) a document that when
opened from email as an attachment opens in view or reading layout, but when
a new document or existing document on the same computer opens in the print
layout?

In Word 2003, click on Tools | Options | General tab | uncheck
the "Allow starting in Reading Layout" box | OK.

But you would be well advised to save the attachment and open the saved
version. Opening an attachment directly from an email message is just asking
for trouble - as is evidenced by the number of posts in this forum that read
along the lines of "I can't find the changes I made to the document that was
attached to an email".
