Word 2007 Page Layout or Format Problem

I purchased a computer with Vista and didn't care for it so I loaded Office
Word 2007. When I send a Word document, such as a resume, as an email
attachment either as a .docx, or a .rtf, or converted to a 2003 .doc
extension the recipient can either not open the attachment or if they can
open it, the page layout or format is messed up.
When I view or print the document I've created the page layout is just fine.
Is the problem on my end or the recipient's? What can I do to ensure the Word
document I send is received as created?

When you open a document in Word, Word uses the specifications
relating to the default printer on that particular copy of Word (not
the one for the copy of Word where the document was created). You and
your recipient probably have different default printers.

You could agree to both set your default printer to the same printer
driver (you don't even need to actually have the same printer, just
its driver!), but the usual way to be sure they see exactly the
formatting you want them to see is to send them a pdf rather than a
Word file.
