I'm using Word 2007 on a Win Vista computer. Ive tailored the normal template
on my desktop computer and use it with no problems. Since I want to use the
same normal template on my new laptop computer (Win Vista) I've transferred
it via a memory stick to the laptop and placed it in Word's template folder.
Now on the laptop, the template works find, but every time I close Word I get
the "Microsoft Office Word has stopped working" error. It seems something is
happening because of the memory stick. Any suggestions?

If you rename the transferred file, with Word closed, and then restart the
application, then does it work? If so, apparently the copied normal.dotm was
damaged.

Yes, when I rename normal.dotm word opens and closes with no problem. Hence,
the template must be damaged. So, transferring the template via memory stick
seems to be damaging the template. I have also discovered that transferring
any of my Word templates via memory stick to the laptop results in the same
problem: when I use the template (on the laptop) word stops working when I
close it. Next, I will try to transfer the normal.dom via email and see if
that solves the problem. Or maybe transfer via CDRW.

I tried moving the Word templates (including normal.dotm) from my desktop to
my laptop via email and via DVDRW. Both approaches worked. Word no longer
hangs when I close the program on the laptop. So, apparently, something
happens when Word templates are stored on a memory stick. I would advise
everyone to stop doing so.

I'm glad you got it sorted. :-)

FWIW, memory sticks aren't generally unsafe (although the one you have been
using could have been damaged).

Note, however, that saving files directly to removable media *is* generally
unsafe: it might cause corruption. Instead, use Windows Explorer to copy
files to and from removable media.

Hi,

I think you can try a utility called Advanced Word Repair to repair
your Word document. It works rather well for my corrupt Word
documents. Its web address is http://www.datanumen.com/awr/ I'm not
sure whether it works for Word2007 files, but you may try if there is
no better choice.
