Since upgrading Windows XP with SP2 I am unable to open
any Word for Windows 6.0 documents that I had saved prior
to upgrade. Rich text formatted documents do open. Is
there any way of retrieving the word documents or are
they lost forever??

I don't know why this would be since I don't use Word, but I have three
suggestions:

1. Quick View Plus from Avanstar reads many older formats. You open the
file in QVP and then convert it to something like .rtf. Unfortunately,
it isn't free.

2. If you don't want to spend any money, you could see if another word
processing program could open the files and convert to .rtf. OpenOffice
(www.openoffice.org) is a free office suite that reads MS Office
formats. Or perhaps Word Perfect would do this and you could find a
friend with WP.

3. Try posting your question in one of the MS Word newsgroups which are
populated by real Word experts. Here's a link to a listing of all the
MS newsgroups:

Good luck,

What happens when you try to open them? You might want to post this in
a Word newsgroup too. Here is a list of all newsgroups:

Once option is to check the file association for .doc files to see if
they are still associated with word. Right click on any *.doc file.
Choose open with, choose program. Select MS Word and tick the box to
always use this program.

Another option would be to uninstall/reinstall word but since it does
read rtf documents it seems that wouldn't be necessary.
