Word for Windows 6.0 error in WORD PAD

B

Bob Havens

I am using Win. XP Home. I installed SP2 about 10 days ago. I created some
Word Pad files on my old 486
computer with Windows 95 and when I got anew computer 3 years ago with XP
Home I loaded the Word Pad files on the new computer which I am now using.

Since I installed SP2 I get an error message that
reads "Can not load Word for Windows 6.0 files". The Word Pad files that I
created on the new PC with Win. XP
Home will open OK. This problem just started after I installed SP2.

I posted this on the XP new users NG and R.S. White, MVP suggested that I
post to this group. However, Note that my problem is in WORD PAD and NOT
in MS WORD. I do not have WORD on my present PC nor did I have it on the
old machine.
Thank you,
Bob

I recently encountered this issue too and I'm not sure what to
suggest.

If you don't have Word then you can use the Word Viewer and copy/paste
the files into a new WordPad document if you need to edit a document.
Note you will need to use the RTF document type since Word 6 documents
are no longer supported.

Here's a link for obtaining a Word Viewer (Note the viewer will work
on Windows XP):

Thank you Beth:
There are not a lot of WP files on my new machine that were on the old one.
I would probably just copy the text to a new WP document. I will D/L the
viewer and see if it does the trick. I do not know a great deal about
computers. What does this line in your reply mean??

"Note you will need to use the RTF document type since Word 6 documents are
no longer supported."

What is an RTF document type????

Thank you,
Bob

Hi Bob,

I hope you find something that works. :)

Regarding RTF, when you create a new WordPad document you will be
given three choices. The RTF (Rich Text Format) is the best choice
since this format can be read by any word processor. (Well...they
should be able to anyway)
