Word files opening wrongly as Power Point files

My word files do have .doc ends, do appear with the Word icon, but when I
double click on them, Power Point is brought up rather than Word, and the
files open as a Power Point presentation. I can only open them as Word files
if I right click on them and select "open with..." and then I highlight Word.
Obviously Power Point is listed somewhere (in the registry) as the default
application to open Word files. How do I restore this to make Word the
default application to open Word files?

There's no checkbox to "always open with" when you do the "Open With"?

Right-click on one of them and select Open with, as you've been doing. But
now select "Choose program." From that list, select Word, and check the box
"Always use this program..."

It should then work properly.
