word files do not display in Vista

My new notebook came with Vista. Word files I receive display scrambled. I
installed Microsoft works suite 2006, thinking that if I had word it would
correct the problem. It did not. Any suggestions?

In order to read Word documents, you must have Word or a Word viewer
installed. The Works suite should have included Word, so if that will not
open the documents, chances are that the documents have been created in Word
2007 format, which earlier versions of Word cannot handle, without the
addition of a converter -
